The Wedding Destroyer

A decent man. A complete catastrophe. Both at once.

For eleven years Kevin Prescott has carried trays at the same country-house wedding venue, and in all that time nobody has looked at the man with the tray. So he puts his invisibility to work: a discreet, very well-reviewed business destroying the weddings of people who deserve it. Business is booming, right up until a premium contract arrives with a name on it he knows.

The whole story is told as Kevin's eulogy at his mother's funeral, to a room that can't leave. Some of them are people whose weddings he ruined.

About the production

A British dark comedy feature about the man with the tray.

The story

Kevin Prescott has carried trays at Hartwell House, a grand country-house wedding venue, for eleven years. He's kind, he's tidy, he says good morning to his spider plant, and in all that time nobody at a wedding has ever once looked at him.

Invisibility, it turns out, is a marketable skill. Kevin goes into business destroying the weddings of people who deserve it, and business is very good indeed. Right up until a contract arrives that he should never have taken.

Told from the pulpit

The whole film is Kevin's eulogy at his mother's funeral, delivered to a room that cannot leave. Some of the mourners are people whose weddings he ruined. He starts out still justifying himself, still getting laughs, still slightly proud. Bit by bit, he stops lying to the room.

The tone

Steve Martin's warmth with a shot of Steve Carell's unearned confidence: a man completely convinced he's doing the right thing, played dead straight. Big, Meet the Parents-sized set-pieces with real heart underneath.

Where it's at

The feature screenplay is in active development.
