About the production

An animated comedy short with a sci-fi horror twist.

The story

During a weekend visit to her single dad Nigel, twelve-year-old Scarlet has her first period. Nigel is completely unprepared but determined to be a hero dad, so he heads out into the night for supplies. Every shop in town is shut.

As the panic rises, Nigel is ambushed by memories of Scarlet's childhood, and the slow realisation that his little girl is growing up. Just as he's about to give up, he finds one shop still open, run by a seemingly helpful newsagent who is hiding a very dark secret.

What it's really about

Underneath the horror and the jokes, First Blood is about something every parent faces: kids growing up, becoming teenagers, and the moment you have to let go.

The look

2D animation in sickly suburban greens and night-light yellows: a horror palette for a story about something completely ordinary.
